THE Junners toyshop building and the old Jailhouse Nightclub on South Street in Elgin are among five properties which will be demolished as part of town centre redevelopment plans.

Several properties on South Street and the High Street in the town have been empty for years.

Some of the buildings had been marketed previously but no suitable regeneration projects came forward.

However, the Elgin City Centre Masterplan will see empty buildings on both streets redeveloped – and the streets linked up – with a new Business Enterprise Hub, affordable housing and retail space.

Now, architects Oberlanders have lodged proposals on behalf of Robertson Property Limited which, alongside the business hub, include plans for three retail units, 38 flats and a courtyard.

The planning applications, which are awaiting decision, are proposing the complete demolition of 51 and 53-55 South Street.

That includes the current home of Elgin Furniture and Carpet Centre which will be demolished as the structure is not compatible with other proposals on the street.

They are also proposing the complete demolition of 59-61 South Street but the entrance to the town's old Victorian market will be retained while the building to the rear will be demolished.

The site of the former Junners building will become home to the new business hub.

It forms part of the Moray Growth Deal project which is being led by UHI Moray and funded by the Scottish Government and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

The facility will offer a space for new and growing businesses.
