DIABETES campaigners in Moray will meet health chiefs next week to discuss future services.
With a growing number of young children in Moray with type 1 diabetes, they say a paediatric consultant at Dr Gray’s Hospital is a crucial post.
Dave Duff, chairman of the Diabetes UK Moray group, said: “The paediatric diabetes nurse does a wonderful job and staff in Aberdeen do their best but when dealing with children it is essential to have help and advice on hand locally.
“The absence of a resident paediatric consultant at Dr Gray’s is of real concern.”
Over 25,000 people in Grampian have diabetes and for every £100 spent on their treatment, £80 of that is spent on treating potentially avoidable complications.
Diabetes is now the biggest single cause of amputation, stroke and blindness in Scotland. It has overtaken cardiovascular disease and has more than 2.5 times the number of sufferers compared to those who live with a cancer.
Richard Carey, chief executive of NHS Grampian and Sandy Dustan, manager of Dr Gray’s Hospital, will be the guests of the group at its annual meeting next Wednesday February 26 at 7pm in The Inkwell in Elgin Youth Café. The meeting is open to all members of the public.
