UNION members at Speyside whisky sites could strike over a 2019 pay offer from Scotland's largest distiller.

The GMB warned Diageo to "get real" or face possible disruption as the drinks giant announced a huge jump in profits on the back of the gin boom. Unite also confirmed that it will ballot its members for strike action ahead of talks with management.

All of the GMB’s near-1000 strong membership across Diageo’s Scottish operations will be balloted for strike action following the collapse of talks at Acas yesterday.

This came on the eve of Diageo's announcement that its operating profits jumped by 9% to £4 billion for the year to June 30.

Walkouts could disrupt production at Diageo's dozens of sites around Scotland, including its 28 malt whisky distilleries which are concentrated in Moray.

Diageo's Speyside distilleries include Cragganmore, Knockando, Cardhu and Glen Elgin.

With Diageo’s latest offer of 2.8% falling short of members’ aspirations for an above-RPI pay rise, the GMB will be recommending that its members vote in favour of strike action.

The ballot will run from Monday, July 29, to Friday, August 16.

GMB Scotland organiser Keir Greenaway said yesterday: "Diageo needs to get real. If anyone can afford to reward their employees with a wage rise that beats the rising cost of living, it’s Diageo.

"They need to come back with an offer that reflects the value the workers bring to the business, and shows them the respect they deserve."

Diageo said it has "well-developed contingency plans in place in the event of any strike action".
