The Forsinard Hotel has been sold for more than its original asking price of £98,000, it has been confirmed.

The run-down property in a remote part of Sutherland had been due to go up for auction earlier this month.

However Auction House Scotland said the former hunting lodge which dates back to 1802, had been sold before bidding could begin.

The identity of the purchaser and the amount it sold for are not being disclosed.

A spokesman for Auction House Scotland said: "We did sell prior to auction and the hotel did achieve in excess of the asking price.

"There was a lot of interest and someone wanted to make an offer before the auction and the seller was happy."

Set in two acres of land, the 13-bedroom hotel closed some years ago.

In its heyday it mainly catered for anglers and visitors seeking outdoor activity breaks.
