DOUGLAS Ross has sent a letter to the Boundary Commission formally objecting to proposals that would see Moray carved into two separate constituencies.

The revised proposals would see Moray split into two new constituences.

The latest proposals would see the creation of two new seats for the next General Election known as 'Aberdeenshire North and Moray East' and 'Nairn, Strathspey and Moray West'.

The revised proposals follow on from plans published last year which could have seen Moray split into three new constituencies if they had been approved.

Ross opposed those plans and reaffirmed his opposition to changes to the constituency again last month.

Ross plans to stand down as an MP before the next General Election but adds that the latest proposals could have wide-reaching consequences for Moray's identity.

He has urged the Boundary Commission to adopt further changes before publishing their revised proposals and for local people to make their views known if they haven’t done so already.

“While some changes have been made to the initial proposals that would see the current Moray constituency carved-up, they simply do not go far enough," Ross said.

“I have consistently voiced my opposition to the proposals and my stance has not changed, which is why I have now submitted my formal letter of objection as I did during the last round of proposals.

“It has been the honour of my life to represent my home area as MP for Moray. I believe constituents in Moray are best served and will continued to be best served by a single MP representing them in an area that mirrors the local council boundary.

“The current plans would carve-up the constituency into two different authorities and would take away a lot of Moray’s identity.

“I hope the Boundary Commission recognise my continued concerns and take them into account before publishing their final proposals for new constituencies and I would urge anyone in Moray to make their views known if they have not done so already.”

The latest consultation period for the proposals closes on December 5.
