DR GRAY'S Hospital is to host a workshop highlighting the many and varied career pathways within the NHS.

Professionals who work with young people to help shape their future careers are being encouraged to attend.

"Our Future Workforce" will give attendees an insight into the job opportunities available within healthcare, including apprenticeship programmes and work experience placements.

The workshop will take place on November 8 and has been organised by Douglas Andrew in his dual roles as learning and development manager with NHS Grampian and a board member on Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Moray.

Mr Andrew said: "It is great to be working alongside DYW Moray to stage this event. It’s really important the NHS can secure a workforce for the future.

"It’s safe to say that we do have an ageing workforce and we need to address this now to ensure that we fill all the roles that are required so we can continue to provide the services we do."

He added: "This event will appeal to anyone who has an influence on young people in choosing their careers – such as teachers, lecturers, careers advisers and guidance teachers.

"We want to show that there are a whole host of opportunities within the NHS and these don’t always have to be medical positions. When most people think of a hospital they tend to think of doctors and nurses, and the frontline positions. However, there are so many more roles within the service such as allied health professions like physiotherapy, dietetics and occupational therapy to name but a few.

"We also have a large workforce who carry out clerical roles so there are business administration and non-clinical roles available too. There are so many different pathways within the NHS and we want to ensure that this information gets back to the young people."

Sarah Baxter, manager of DYW Moray which was set up to ensure educators, employers and young people work together, said the event will offer a great insight into the many roles available.

"We have been working with Douglas and the event will include an informative welcome and explanation of what is available and attendees will also hear from apprentices who are currently working within NHS Grampian.

"The organisation offers foundation, modern and graduate apprenticeships and what they really want to make known is the fact that they can provide careers to young people who have a range of attainment levels. The DYW Moray message is that there are many pathways into employment and NHS Grampian embraces this wholeheartedly."

The event will run between 9am and 1pm on Friday, November 8. To register contact Sarah Baxter at DYW Moray by emailing sbaxter@dywmoray.co.uk.
