A drink driver badly injured a motorcyclist in a crash on the A95 between Aberlour and Grantown-on-Spey.

The victim, who was wearing dark clothing and no helmet, suffered several broken bones and landed 65ft from the point of collision.

Graeme Costine, a motorist from Fife, had been overtaking another car and failed to see the bike.

Costine was later breathalysed and recorded a reading of 53. The legal limit is 22.

The 47-year-old, who lives in Ballingry, near Dunfermline, admitted driving with excess alcohol as well as causing serious injury by careless driving on October 6 last year at Marypark.

Fiscal depute Pauline Gair told Inverness Sheriff Court that the biker spent four days in hospital after undergoing surgery.

She added: "The emergency services were called and the motorcyclist was flown by air ambulance to Aberdeen with serious leg injuries.

"He had two broken femurs and had to have surgery when two pins were inserted. He also had a fractured collar bone."

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank deferred sentencing Costine until January 25 to allow a background report to be prepared.

Defence solicitor Robert Cruickshank reserved his comments in mitigation for that date.
