A drink driver who took the unusual step of reporting himself to the police has been fined and banned from the roads.

Scott McLaughlin was in Moray to visit his cousin on August 3 last year.

He went to the pub, then carried on drinking at the Elgin home of his cousin on Springfield Road.

Elgin Sheriff Court was told that McLaughlin walked outside to get something from his relative's car.

His defence solicitor stated that the 25-year-old then had a "mental aberration" and decided to drive the vehicle, despite only possessing a provisional licence.

McLaughlin rang the police station at about 2.20am.

Officers later found the vehicle on Dean of Guild Way in New Elgin.

McLaughlin was taken to the police station where a breath test recorded a reading of 78, compared to the legal limit of 22.

In addition to drink driving, the Kilmarnock resident pleaded guilty to two other charges of having no insurance and no L-plates.

He received a 12-month ban as well as a £1000 fine, which he agreed to pay at the rate of £100/month.
