An Elgin woman has been sentenced after she admitted spitting at a police officer outside Dr Gray's.

Wendy Stuart was taken to the Elgin hospital after concerns were expressed about her welfare.

However the 52-year-old began shouting and swearing in the busy foyer.

Speaking at Inverness Sheriff Court, senior fiscal depute Alison Young said: "She pushed into the face of one constable.

"She was saying, 'I am the one in control here. You will do as I say or I will batter you'.

"Police put handcuffs on her but she refused to calm down.

"It was decided to take her back to the police station.

"As she was being put into the vehicle, she kicked at a constable and spat twice at her.

"A spit hood was put on her. She was clearly intoxicated."

Stuart, of Gordon Street, admitted committing assault on May 9, 2022, as well as acting in a threatening and abusive manner.

Laura-Jane McFarlane, her lawyer, said: "She is very embarrassed by being here. The main issue is her alcohol intake. She has sought help and has not been in trouble since.

"If she gets support, I don't think we will see her in court again."

Sheriff Sara Matheson had previously called for a report into Stuart's background.

After reading it, the sheriff agreed with its conclusion and, as an alternative to jail, placed Stuart under 14 months of social work supervision.
