Dyslexia Awareness Week runs from November 4-9 and Dyslexia Scotland Moray Firth, the local branch of Dyslexia Scotland, will be holding a drop-in session on Wednesday, November 6, in the Maisondieu Suite at the Laichmoray Hotel, from 2-8pm.
Local branch members will be available to answer questions and there will be a wide range of resources on view. A small exhibition will run throughout the week at both Elgin and Forres libraries.
Dyslexia Scotland says one in 10 children and adults in Scotland has dyslexia and that it is not just about spelling, reading and writing – it can also cause difficulties with short-term memory, organisational and processing skills.
Conversely, it has also been shown that children and adults with dyslexia often have some of the best creative abilities, out-of-the-box thinking and problem-solving skills.
A range of people from different backgrounds have joined this year’s Dyslexia Scotland poster campaign to demonstrate the positives dyslexia can bring to their workplace. They include a policeman, trainee teacher, office manager in the Scottish Government, businessman and entrepreneur.
Raising awareness in schools is a big part of Dyslexia Awareness Week and Dyslexia Scotland has developed a presentation to be shown in assemblies and classrooms, which is based on Dyslexia Unwrapped, its website for 8 to 18-year-olds.
