FIRE ripped through an Elgin business.

Vehicles at the Fleet Management Services business on the Grampian Road industrial estate were destroyed in the blaze.

Thick black smoke dominated the Elgin skyline just after 6pm on Monday night when the fire started.

A total of six fire engines attended the blaze and also a special water carrier vehicle.

A police cordon was thrown around the area with the risk of explosion from vans and minibuses on fire.

Tyres and equipment at a nearby agricultural business were also damaged in the blaze.

Senior fire chief Rae Cameron confirmed that there had been a risk of explosion from an acetaline cylinder on the premises.

It took around 40 firefighters around an hour to extinguish the blaze.

A number of firefighters remained on scene throughout the night to ensure there was no flare up and the cordon remained in place overnight.

FMS owner Allan Howie told 'The Scot': "It was amazing the ferocity of the flames. Hats off to the firefighters for putting out the blaze.

"We don't know what happened yet, the fire brigade are still carrying out an investigation."

However, Mr Howie insisted they are still very much open for business, despite nine vehicles being destroyed by the fire.

There were 30 vehicles in the firm's yard at the time, although they have a fleet of over 100 vans, pick-ups and mini-buses which they hire out to companies all over Scotland.
