Cadets Robert McMillian (14) and Zara Laws (14), from 1st Battalion The Highlander's Elgin Detachment, used their first aid skills to help a person who had become 'unresponsive' last summer.

The pair came across the person in need while out for a walk near Lady Hill in Elgin and were quick to assess the casualty and contact an ambulance for them to be taken to Dr Gray's Hospital where they made a full recovery.

Both cadets received Army Cadet Charitable Trust UK Praiseworthy First Aid certificates last month for putting their potentially life skills into action.

Cadet Laws also received a second certificate for putting her skills to use on a family member in October last year.

While getting ready for school she noticed that her mum was having difficulties breathing and, as she had done just a few months prior, she used her first aid skills to take control of the situation, contact an ambulance and reassure her mother while keeping her siblings updated.

Detachment Commander Sergeant Major Instructor Graeme Wells (30), who put the pair forward for the awards, said that he was 'proud' of the cadets for putting their training into practice.

He said: “Both cadets used their skills without hesitation and certainly saved lives by doing so.

"I am extremely proud of both Zara and Robert and thought their actions were worth noting and glad to see that their actions have been recognised."

Both Robert and Zara were presented with their certificates by the Battalion’s Commandant Colonel Mike MacDonald, at the Battalion’s Cadet Training Centre in Dingwall, during the Moray Company Annual Awards Dinner in December last year.
