The measure is a direct response to the coronavirus "public health emergency".

In a statement on the centre's Facebook page, a spokesperson confirmed: "As a practice we will be doing our utmost to protect our patients and staff.

"To this end we have today taken the very difficult decision to close the surgery front door and all access will be mediated through an enhanced telephone triage service.

"The length of time that the triage service works in the morning and afternoon has been extended.

"As long as we have the staff available the access to the same day telephone service will be enhanced."

The practice phone number is 0345 337 99 88.

"We fully appreciate that many of you are acutely concerned by the present situation. Please be assured that we will support you with advice and, if necessary, consultation at this time."

The practice said it will post regular updates on its Facebook page.

It also said there is a very good self-help guide on the NHSinform website.
