Elgin Sheriff Court heard that Douglas Chalmers (48) challenged the man at Lhanbryde Primary School during an incident on September 23, 2022.

Fiscal depute Shamielah Ghafar told the court that a witness noticed Chalmers, of Main Street, Urquhart, 'nose to nose' with another man at the school at around 6pm on the date in question.

He was heard challenging the man to a 'square go' and yelling 'come on then'. The witness also noticed Chalmers holding a hammer with a blue grip.

Police were called and, upon arriving on the scene, noticed two individuals talking. Both were spoken to and Chalmers told them that he had challenged the man to a fight.

The hammer was found under the seat of a nearby vehicle.

Defence solicitor Kevin Anderson said that his client was aiming to settle a long-standing dispute with the man he confronted.

"He just wanted to meet up to resolve the matter once and for all," Mr Anderson said.

"He accepts that it wasn't best practice to go armed though there were reasons for this.

"Alcohol certainly had a part to play as well."

Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov gave Chalmers a nine month supervision order.
