TWO classes of children at East End Primary School have been putting their cooking skills to the test thanks to an Education Scotland grant.

The Elgin school submitted a request to the Food for Thought Fund and was granted £2000, which will enable the P4-5 and P5 classes to team up with Elgin Youth Development Group and improve their culinary skills over the course of eight weeks.

East End's project is called Food Glorious Food and aims to teach pupils basic food preperation, cooking skills and promote an understanding of food waste – all while involving members of the family. It also encourages the use of local produce.

Head teacher Gail McIntosh said: "The children are enjoying the sessions so far – we are three weeks in. They are learning the basic skills and using the vocabulary. You can see the language of cooking coming through.

"The children are also learning about food safety, where things should be stored and safe use of appliances. They are also looking at the different elements of a healthy diet."

Each of the classes has one cooking session per week, so there is a total of 16 sessions over the eight week period. Around 45 pupils will benefit from the classes.

The food being made is generally something that can be eaten as a snack during school time. So far sandwiches, pitta pockets, crudités, pot noodles and banana sushi have been on the menu.
