An Elgin man jailed for threatening to petrol bomb his neighbourhood has been caught with a mobile phone in prison.

The phone was found hidden inside a cardboard toilet roll tube after Alan Whyte returned to his cell, following a visit to the prison doctor.

The 34-year-old appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court via video link earlier today.

He admitted the offence, which occurred on April 8, and had two more months added to the 30 months he is already serving.

Whyte instigated a stand-off at the Pinefield Apartments on January 24 last year.

He claimed to have a gun, and repeatedly lit a lighter while saying the word 'kaboom'.

After the police forced entry to his flat, they found a whisky bottle with a cloth wick and flammable liquid.

He subsequently admitted three charges of threatening behaviour, plus others of sending a menacing text and possessing an incendiary device.

Whyte also pleaded guilty to a sixth charge of being involved in the supply of 12 ounces of cannabis, worth at least £2000.

He was jailed for two-and-a-half years in February.
