Alastair Smith, who owns Bishopmill Pharmacy, said the prescription workload and delivery workload have increased dramatically.

He urged the public to follow some key guidlines to support staff at all pharmacies:

Order only what you need and in plenty of time. Do not panic order and stock pile.

If you have to self-isolate and you have family and friends who can collect your prescription, ask them to do so as long as they are fit to do so.

If you have arranged a delivery make sure you are in to receive it. Medication cannot be posted through doors, it needs to be handed over to you.

Most importantly, do not come into the pharmacy of you symptoms consistent with Covid-19.

Mr Smith reassured people: "Please be patient as we can assure you we are doing our best.

"We put ourselves at risk, along with all other healthcare workers, for your benefit.

"At Bishopmill Pharmacy we are working extra hours to cope with demand."
