A SPARKLING evening of dance entertainment led by pupils at a Moray school has raised £1200 for a charity close to their hearts.

Elgin Academy emulated the stars of the screen during a Strictly Come Dancing spectacular with A Night at the Movies theme, held earlier this month.

Proceeds have now been tallied from the sell-out showcase, with money made going to Abbie's Sparkle Foundation.

The charity honours Abbie Main, who passed away on Christmas Day, 2017, after living with a rare form of cancer for four years and four months.

Abbie, who attended Elgin Academy, was known for her smile, sparkle and infectious enthusiasm and so pupils made sure those traits were present in abundance during the Glitterball event.

Drama teacher Melissa MacDonald said: "The S6 fundraising committee have been working tirelessly towards the Strictly Come Dancing event since the beginning of this term, organising and running every facet of the evening.

"The hugely successful event brought in over 200 audience members from across the school community and raised over £1200 for Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation.

"This charity is very close to the hearts of our pupils and it was very important to them not only to raise money, but also to present the evening as a tribute to their friend Abbie Main.

"With performances from pupils and teachers, the evening was a fantastic showcase of the talent, enthusiasm and team spirit."

While everyone who took to the dance floor was a winner, the Glitterball Trophy was awarded to Emma Whitton and Eloise Pender for their dance to A Friend Like Me, from Disney's Aladdin.
