AN ELGIN taxi driver's dedication to his local community has been recognised with an award.

Garey Stewart (59) made headlines last year when he drove a pregnant woman, who was worried about not being able to make it to the hospital to give birth, all the way to Aberdeen free of charge. The Elgin local has also been giving tours to older people to combat loneliness.

Now Mr Stewart, who has run Guvnor's Taxis for 13 years, has seen his achievements acknowledged as he was runner-up in the inaugural Parliamentary Taxi and Private Hire Awards.

Speaking to the Northern Scot about his award win, 'Guv' said: "I'm Elgin born and bred and I like helping people from the local area and doing my bit.

"I take the older generation out on tours and they enjoy mixing with each other. It's just me giving a little bit back.

"I also give half an hour tours to people visiting Moray and people have come back to the area to have a Guvnor's Taxis trip."

All of the United Kingdom's 650 MPs were invited to nominate a local taxi driver and Douglas Ross, Moray's Conservative MP, put forward former Elgin Academy pupil Garey, who says he picked up his nickname 'Guv' for "sorting out bullies" at school.

Mr Ross said: "I nominated Garey because he has gone above and beyond to assist local people in Moray. His passion for what he does and for our area shines though which is why I was delighted to nominate him."

The awards were introduced to Parliament by Labour MP Daniel Zeichner. He added: "I congratulate Garey on his runner-up prize. He should be very proud of the contribution he has made to both the trade and his community.”
