ELGIN 24-hour gym Anytime Fitness has announced it will close permanently.

Worried paying members were left in the dark in locked-down mid-April after all fitness and office equipment was cleared from its Elgin Retail Park premises without warning or explanation.

The 800-strong membership had expected the gym to reopen on Monday, April 26, following lockdown closure since December.

Anytime Fitness head office told Elgin members then that the club was undergoing a transition of franchisee.

Members claim they have since been unable to reach the Elgin club's franchise owner, Chris McIntyre, who operates Plus Fitness Limited.

Anytime Fitness has now said all attempts to keep the gym open have failed. Its members have been contacted with advice on recovering any fees paid to Plus Fitness.

The closure announcement, which was posted on social media, reads: "We regret to announce that Anytime Fitness Elgin will not be reopening.

"We have been trying hard to make contact with Plus Fitness Limited, the current business owner, to help reach an agreement with the landlord and transition the club to new ownership to secure the future of Anytime Fitness Elgin.

"Unfortunately, all attempts have proven unsuccessful.

"We appreciate that this is a hugely disappointing outcome for Anytime Fitness Elgin members and want to take this opportunity to assure you that we have done all we can to try and prevent this permanent closure.

"Anytime Fitness Elgin operated as an independent franchise business and membership agreements are directly with Plus Fitness Limited, the owner of the Elgin franchise. All membership fees were paid to Plus Fitness Limited.

"All members should have received an email with details and advice on recovering any money owed. Please let us know if you didn’t receive this.

"We would like to thank you for your loyalty and patience whilst we tried to secure the club’s reopening under new ownership, and for your loyalty and commitment as part of our members’ community."

The gym opened up in Elgin in August 2016.
