Glass on the door at the front of the shop was broken through, before burglars took £1000 in cash and the CCTV hard drive and left. No stock was taken and no staff were harmed.

The break-in was reported at 9am this morning by a local man walking to work – and took place overnight from Sunday into Monday morning.

Christina Ireland, who runs the shop, was left shocked and saddened by the break-in.

She said: "We are a locally owned business and not a massive corporation so the money means a lot to us.

"We all enjoy working here. We are a bit shocked and upset."

Christina says two nearby places are fitted with CCTV, so she hopes those guilty will be caught. An alarm system will be installed on the premises tomorrow.

The shop doors were replaced by Pinefield this morning, with working finishing this afternoon.

The Candy Shop is open for business and is open from 10am until 10pm every day of the week.
