THE Moray Mental Health and Wellness Centre has closed down.

The service was run by mental health charity Penumbra, alongside Health and Social Care Moray from their office on Elgin's Batchen Street.

The wellness centre had previously moved their services online during the pandemic but after the five year contract with the charity ended, Moray Health and Social Care made the decision to close the service on March 31.

A spokesperson for Health & Social Care Moray said: “The decommissioning of the service enables us to develop and fund new approaches to promote positive mental health and support people to recover from mental ill health.

"Support continues to be provided by the Mental Health Social Work Team and a new mental health and wellbeing practitioner service aligned to Primary Care and accessed via GP practices will begin shortly.

"Penumbra continues to have a presence in Moray through the delivery of the distress brief intervention (DBI) programme, an innovative service which provides early intervention to people in distress, supporting them to manage the causes of their distress and reduce the possibility of future distress.

Work is also being taken forward by Health & Social Care Moray and the Moray Alcohol and Drug Partnership to recommission a ‘no wrong door’ drug and alcohol direct access service. This will offer support for people with co-occurring mental health and substance use problems."

A spokesperson from Penumbra Mental Health said: "We've learned so much from the people that we've met and supported in the last five years, and we'd like to extend a huge thank you to the community who have been there for us throughout.

"During this time our team have used insight from their own lived experience in their work and it's been a privilege to support so many people on their journey to better mental health through the power of peer. We do of course retain a strong presence in Moray through the distress brief intervention (DBI) programme, and we're pleased to continue offering compassionate support when people most need it."
