A LOCAL group from Elgin are set to put the fun in fundraising at New Elgin Hall this weekend.

‘Mum Days’ was started by Melissa MacDonald in 2022 because she believed that many mums, including herself, were finding it hard to make connections both for themselves and their babies.

Melissa found herself waiting around for someone to start a group but soon realised she could take matters into her own hands.

She said: “I realised I could be that person and rather than hanging around wishing, so I took the plunge and set it up!”

Originally, the group met in cafés or parks but soon outgrew these smaller spaces.

Thanks to a funding award from the New Elgin East and West Community Plan, they have been able to secure the New Elgin Hall, where they meet every second Wednesday from 10am-Noon.

‘Mum Days’ has helped to create a safe environment for mothers and their babies and has allowed them to form connections with others in similar situations.

Melissa said: "We have always set out to create an informal, friendly and safe environment for mums, pregnant and birthing people, and preschool children to socialize.

“We have a variety of toys and sections for different age groups, refreshments, and a table of freebies donated by various partners and the community.”

The group also invites representatives from local organisations and charities to engage with mums, share advice, and open up opportunities to join groups or seek support.

On Sunday, June 23, they will be holding their Marketplace fundraiser in the New Elgin Hall from 10am-2pm. Tickets only cost £1.

At the event, community members will be selling pre-loved items and local businesses will sell their own products and creations.

The group have also hired soft play from ‘Teddy Bear Tumbles’, a local business run by mums within the community.

There will be stalls with lots of different activities and many chances to win prizes, including a raffle filled with donations from local businesses.

Food and drink will be provided by ‘Mother Goose Catering’ and ‘The Coffee Bar’.

Melissa added: “It will be a fun day out for all the family and a chance to connect with the local community.

“Let the wee ones play and grab some bargains without breaking the bank!”

Money raised will help support the group and keep them helping members of the community.

Melissa has ideas for family fun days, seasonal parties and ‘Mums Only’ events.

However, she ultimately explained that: “Mum Days should be shaped by what the members want and need, so we will be reaching out and listening to them.”
