Eric and Gladys Hayward (both 79), of Longmorn, near Elgin remain in good spirits and enjoyed a quiet celebration of their big day on Tuesday, said daughter Alison Kennedy, who lives in Hopeman.

Alison has been delivering shopping to them and she took the chance to make them an anniversary cake which was well received along with a card from the Queen.

The couple, who married in Gladys’ home town of Forres in 1960, had been planning a big family celebration and their last ever foreign holiday to celebrate.

“My uncle, who lives in Wales, and his partner, were going to go with them in May to Majorca. We would have had a big family celebration as well but obviously that wasn’t possble,” said Alison.

Eric, from Wishaw, was stationed at RAF Kinloss when the couple met. They spent time in Cyprus and Singapore before settling in Burghead and latterly Longmorn. Gladys was a nurse at Dr Gray’s Hospital for 15 years. After retiring from the RAF, flight engineer Eric joined the Oman Air Force.

“They have a wee dog so they can still take it for a walk down the lane near their house and get out in their garden,” added Alison.

"They are feeling a bit cut off but are okay. Mum used to enjoy going to the bingo and doing her own shopping, but I have been picking up their shopping list and delivering it to them.

"Their wedding day was slightly ruined as well because their photographer died the day before the wedding and my grandparents crashed their car on the way to the wedding and didn't make it."

The couple also have a son Richard, who is a teacher in Egypt.
