More than 3000 carers across Moray and Aberdeenshire seem set to receive a one-off payment of £230.

.

The Scottish Government has revealed plans to invest £19.2million to provide further support to carers across the country.

If approved by parliament, around 83,000 eligible carers across Scotland will get the Coronavirus Carer’s Allowance Supplement in June – with around 995 in Moray and 2130 in Aberdeenshire set to benefit.

The extra payment will be made automatically to people in receipt of Carer’s Allowance.

Moray's MSP Richard Lochhead said: "Carers make an absolutely vital contribution to our society.

"It’s only appropriate that their hard work is valued and they are properly supported by the Scottish Government."

Banff and Buchan MSP Stewart Stevenson also welcomed the measure.

He said: "I am delighted that the SNP Government have stepped in to support carers even further and give them the recognition they deserve as they provide vital support to family, friends and neighbours across the North-east in these extremely difficult circumstances.

"This one-off payment will benefit some of the true heroes in our communities.

"I know carers are some of those most in need.

"Many have some of the most intense caring roles, providing at least 35 hours unpaid care weekly to a disabled child or adult in receipt of higher level disability benefits."
