AN event is being held at the end of this month to celebrate half a century of community councils within Moray.

Currently there are 17 community councils active within out borders, with over 130 community councillors.

It's exactly 50 years since the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 brought them into existence.

The aim, then and now, was for local people to engage with the important issues in their neighbourhoods.

John Cowe, Moray Council’s civic leader, said: "This anniversary gives us the ideal opportunity to recognise the contribution they have made to the local area over the years.

"So many of our community heroes have been, and continue to be, stalwarts on our community councils. They represent us as at a micro-local level with everything from planning and licensing matters, to contributing to our environmental initiatives and youth projects.

"Some even hold the purse strings to windfarm monies that are re-invested in our communities. There really is no area of public life they aren’t involved in.

"I thank them all for their hard work over the last 50 years."

An event to mark the milestone is being held at Elgin Library on Saturday, October 28, from 1pm-4pm.

Its organisers are asking for people with interesting memorabilia, such as photographs, newspaper articles or anything else, to get in touch.
