THIRTY per cent of Moray's workers have been furloughed amid the pandemic, according to new figures.

HMRC statistics published last week show 11,700 workers in Moray have had their jobs safeguarded by the UK Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

Across Scotland, 628,000 jobs have been furloughed.

Covering up to the end of May, the statistics are the first to be released since the scheme was introduced in March to pay staff furloughed when their employers had to close under the Covid-19 lockdown.

The furlough scheme works by providing grants to employers of up to 80% of salary to the maximum value of £2,500 per employee.

An additional 146,000 self-employed jobs have been saved through a £425 million support package.

The Self-Employment Income Support Scheme, which provides support for self-employed individuals whose business has been adversely affected by the coronavirus, has also provided a lifeline for many businesspeople across Moray, where 2600 self-employed have made claims totalling £7.8 million.

HMRC has released statistics on the furlough scheme across the UK.
