A CREW from Findhorn are celebrating after crossing the finishing line in the capital's Great River Race.

The team – made up of Alison McKay, Gwen Williams, Kay Anderson, Maclean Macleod, Mark Lean and Ruth Boardman – swapped cruises along Moray's coast for the hustle and bustle of central London as they took on the River Marathon.

Along with vessels from Findochty and Cromarty, Findhorn Coastal Rowing Club's skiff Joppa was among 300 boats taking part in the annual challenge, which attracts entrants from around the world.

Spectators lined the Thames as the traditional vessels passed, all coxed craft and powered by a minimum of four oars or paddles. In accordance with the rules, each boat carried a passenger.

Boats were handicapped according to their calculated potential performance.

Then a staggered start meant the slowest were away first with each boat having an individual start time.

Crew member Ruth Boardman said: "Waiting to start was an exciting and pressured time as we had to ensure we were in the correct holding zone, while resisting the pull of the tide which was trying hard to send us on our way.

"Joppa was scheduled to leave at 11.59am and she left exactly on time, thanks to the skill and nerve of our first cox, Kay.

"We rowed 21.6 miles past many iconic landmarks and under 26 bridges. Cheers and applause constantly boosted flagging energy along with a brass band on a river boat.

"Our club photographer, Annie, watched our progress from the spectator boat. We crossed the finish line 3 hours, 7 minutes and 14 seconds after we started to encouragement from family and friends.

"The after party was a vibrant celebration with food, a few beverages and live music. There was a surprising amount of energy left for dancing and revelry.

"The Great River race is a fabulous event. It is brilliantly organised and enthusiastically attended by a diverse range of boats and rowers resulting in a great day with a wonderful atmosphere."
