Blaze at Poundland at Elgin as five fire appliances on the scene and wheelchair user helped out of store by staff
POUNDLAND on Elgin High Street caught fire this evening – with three members of staff helping a wheelchair user escape the flames.
The blaze started within the store – in the hygiene products aisle, it is believed – shortly after 6pm.
Billows of smoke could be seen over Elgin – with loud bangs heard coming from within Poundland by those first on the scene.
Within the shop, three members of staff, who were counting up for the night, helped the last customer – a wheelchair user – escape the fire.
At least five fire appliances and four police vehicles have been on the scene since the fire started, and it is now under control.
The A96 is closed from Halfords to Tesco roundabout, with traffic being diverted via Bishopmill Brae.
Alexandra Street is also closed, along with Elgin Bus Station, while staff at Domino's were evacuated as a precaution.
A cordon is also in place on the Plainstones on Elgin High Street as hundreds of people around the high street watch on.
