MORAY Council is asking for feedback from the public as it took its first step today towards building a new cemetery in Elgin.

A site to the south of the town has been identified by the local authority as a way of reducing pressure on the town's existing cemetery.

Six hectares in size – about the equivalent of 15 football pitches – the proposed area is near the new sports centre on Linkwood Road.

The first of two events for the public to give their views is being staged this afternoon from 2pm-6pm in the New Elgin and Ashgrove Hall.

A second opportunity will also be available at the same venue and between the same times on Tuesday, November 28.

Meanwhile, what's called a planning application notice (PAN) went before the local authority own planning committee earlier today.

This is a formal legal process which has to to be undertaken because, as the site is larger than two hectares, it's classed as a 'major development'.

Speaking at today's planning meeting, John Divers (Elgin South, Labour) said: "Living near the present Elgin cemetery what's very clear are the parking issues.

"Anything that does go forward would need substantial parking."

Marc Macrae (Fochabers/Lhanbryde, Conservative), the committee's deputy chairman, agreed: "That was certainly very visible yesterday when there was some very sad business that took place in Elgin.

"With the traffic trying to exit Elgin there was quite a snarl up at the cemetery."

Sonya Warren (Buckie, SNP) asked whether part of the proposed new cemetery could be given up to 'green burials' to allow the council to offer the public a more environmentally friendly option.

She was informed that this idea would certainly be examined.

Speaking outside the meeting cllr Macrae, said: "The council recognises that cemetery provision must be done with the utmost sensitivity and care, and feedback from residents will help to ensure our plans are shaped properly.

"This is a great opportunity for residents to tell us what they think about this proposal for a new cemetery in Elgin."
