A MORAY motorist who crashed into a fellow road user while disqualified has been banned from getting behind the wheel for five years.

Christopher Smith (32), of Church Street in Dufftown, appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted driving carelessly in Nairn on June 20, 2021 – when he collided with another car while disqualified.

The motorist that Smith collided with had to pay a £250 excess on his insurance and then saw his premiums rocket as a result of the incident. He will be compensated by Smith for his loss.

Fiscal depute Emily Hood told Sheriff David Harvie that the total loss for the aggrieved driver was £561.48.

Defence solicitor John MacColl said: "He had gone with his brother who was going to buy a vehicle. My client foolishly agreed to drive the other car back home."

Sheriff Harvie also imposed 200 hours of unpaid work, and placed Smith under 18 months of social work supervision.
