WHEN the daughter of a Fochabers butcher was born 12 weeks early, it was the support of his boss which enabled him to balance his career with time by her side in hospital.

Now, both dad Matthew Newlands and his employer Alan Jamieson have been recognised on the national stage for going above and beyond to help the industry and those in it.

Together, they were presented with the prestigious Scottish Craft Butchers' Extra Mile Award, which is supported by Quality Meat Scotland’s Scotch Butchers Club.

Nominated by his family for his commendable commitment and always providing for them, Matthew took the recognition after changing career at 26 to become a butcher.

His boss Alan was also recognised for his unwavering support of staff, including Matthew, in their professional development and personal skills. Alan’s mentorship and support is a vital part of the business’s success and his staff’s development.

Matthew's daughter weighed just 1lb 15oz when she was born and it was Alan’s support which enabled Matthew to spend time at the neonatal unit in Aberdeen.

Alan also helped Matthew and his wife organise a fundraiser for the hospital which raised over £3500.

Alan Clarke, chief executive of Quality Meat Scotland, said: "It's vitally important that the skill, dedication and talent of our Scottish craft butchers is celebrated.

"Every entry received reflects the passion and commitment in the industry, and we're thrilled that some of the country's best butchers are receiving national recognition for the important work they do. Many congratulations to both Matthew and Alan."

The Extra Mile Award is one of a number of training awards, which include Training Mentor of the Year and Training Partner of the Year. The Modern Apprentice of the Year Level 2 and Modern Apprentice of the Year Level 3 are supported by the Scottish Qualifications Agency.

Gordon King, executive manager of the Scottish Craft Butchers, added: "These awards are a vital part of our industry as they reward and recognise the accomplished craft butchers, at all stages of their career, who play a vital role in preserving and promoting butchery skills across Scotland.

"All of the winners and finalists are leaders in their field and deserve huge congratulations.”

The Scotch Butchers Club has around 250 members committed to sourcing top quality Scotch Beef PGI, Scotch Lamb PGI and Specially Selected Pork from approved suppliers.

The club is committed to helping develop training and skills in butchery and, ultimately, to growing the industry.
