Former Elgin teacher in top government role

A FORMER Elgin teacher will help Scotland to build post-Brexit links in her new government role.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon unveiled a number of new appointments to the Scottish Government and cabinet this week.

Among these, she nominated former teacher of modern studies at Elgin High School, Jenny Gilruth MSP, to join the government as Minister for Europe and International Development, where she will support Michael Russell.

Ms Sturgeon will propose the appointment of Ms Gilruth as a minister to the Scottish Parliament today.

Ms Sturgeon said: "Jenny Gilruth will join government for the first time – having proven herself as a talented and hard-working MSP – and takes on the role of Minister for Europe and International Development.

"She will have the important task of promoting Scotland, building new links in a post-Brexit environment and delivering on our global responsibilities – and I know she is more than up to that challenge."

Miss Gilruth was raised in Banff before her family moved to Ceres, Fife.

Prior to being elected to represent the Mid Fife and Glenrothes constituency in 2016, Miss Gilruth worked for over a decade in education.
