Kieran Lindsay, who attended Lossiemouth High School from 2011 to 2017, graduated with his degree in Architecture from the University of Dundee in June 2023.

His final-year dissertation was put forward by the university for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Dissertation Medal, where he was up against nominees from more than 500 schools of architecture in 100 countries.

In a year that saw a high number of entries across all categories in the RIBA President’s Medals, the judging panel decided that Kieran’s entry was one of three to be awarded a commendation in in the Dissertation Medal category.

The panel said this was the highest award that an entry from the University of Dundee had achieved in 187 years of the RIBA President’s Medals.

Kieran’s entry was called A Project of Autonomy: Renegotiating the Border as a Condition of Collectivity and was on the Lithium Triangle.

The Lithium Triangle is situated at the borders of Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, and is an area that has been embroiled in a series of border disputes and trade disagreements since colonisation.

Kieran's dissertation focused on resource extraction, the negotiation of border zones, and consideration of the role that architecture plays in forming these contested spaces.

He received his award at the president’s medal ceremony, which took place at the RIBA in London in December. He attended with his proud parents and partner.

Kieran was presented with his commendation certificate by Judge Samir Pandya, assistant head of school, University of Westminster and RIBA President Muyiwa Oki.
