In recognition of his contributions, committee members of The Moray Way Association presented Mr Thomson with a hamper filled with Moray products.

The Moray Way Association is the driving force behind the promotion of the region's 100-mile-long circular walking route.

The organisation was established in 2009 following a well-attended public meeting, where the vision of creating a new trail encircling Moray's diverse landscape took root.

Norman's wealth of knowledge regarding the route has been instrumental, contributing to the publication of a Moray Way map and, more recently, the release of his book The Moray Way Companion in 2022.

He was also chairman of the committee when the annual Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival was first run in 2012, which has since grown to be one of the top 10 walking festivals in the UK.

Kath Todd, the current Chair of The Moray Way Association said: "We thought that a hamper of Moray produce would reflect his interest in the diversity of the whole county.

"His knowledge of the walking routes and the history of the area will be sorely missed by the committee."

Despite stepping down, Norman remains active. Kath added: “Some of our current committee went to visit Norman to thank him for all his efforts.

"Being Norman, the conversation soon turned to what everyone is planning for the future.

"He has exciting ideas for Scottish Week in Forres in early June and he was still keen to hear what was happening during the next Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival which will take place over midsummer from Friday, June 14, to Monday, June 24."

The Moray Way Association is keen to hear from anyone interested in joining the committee which is currently also looking for volunteers to support the development of the Moray Ways webpage, a digital library of routes across Moray.
