FOUR in five people disagree with Douglas Ross and the Scottish Conservatives' decision to intimate a no confidence vote against First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

That's what the results of a poll held across The Northern Scot, Forres Gazette and Grampian Online show.

Mr Ross intimated a vote of no confidence in Scotland's First Minister on Tuesday evening, saying she "must resign" after "lying to parliament" with regard the Alex Salmond case.

While Ms Sturgeon was giving evidence on Wednesday morning, we asked readers for their thoughts on the no confidence vote.

The poll closed at 5pm tonight. Of 8888 votes, 7131 (80 per cent) said that Mr Ross was wrong to intimate the no confidence vote with 1724 (19 per cent) saying he was right to do so and 33 (1 per cent) unsure.

Moray's SNP MSP Richard Lochhead said the results show Mr Ross is "out of touch with his constituents", but Mr Ross is continuing to call for Ms Sturgeon to resign.

He said: "Calling upon a First Minister to resign is not a decision that is taken lightly. However, the evidence against Nicola Sturgeon is overwhelming.

"Recent national polling has suggested two thirds of Scots agree that a breach of the ministerial code should be a resignation matter for the First Minister.

"The evidence that the SNP tried to keep hidden for months has now been released, although even now not in full, and it proves that Nicola Sturgeon has lied and broken the ministerial code, multiple times.

"She must go."

Reacting to the results of the poll, Moray's SNP MSP Richard Lochhead said: "This is a stunning and thunderous message to Douglas Ross and his party that shows he is completely out of touch with his own constituents who are really infuriated by his political opportunism and priorities especially in the middle of a pandemic that our First Minister is working flat out to get us through.

"The fact that Mr Ross announced his no confidence motion prior to the First Minister’s eight-hour appearance to put her side of the story before the parliamentary committee spoke volumes and illustrates that the Conservatives were only really interested in inflicting political damage on political opponents rather than the serious issues being addressed by Parliament.”
