MORAY Council has confirmed that it has reached an agreement to make parking in its car parks across Elgin free ahead of Christmas.

Parking will be free on Saturdays in an effort to promote local shops and facilities as the festive season gets into full swing.

The scheme is an extension of the council’s Christmas shopping car parking promotion called Free After 3.

Free After 3 offers free parking in St Giles car park in Elgin on weekdays after 3pm, starting between November 27 and January 5.

However, the free Saturday parking offer applies on Saturdays between November 25 and December 23.

It is being funded by Elgin councillors with £11,000 from the Elgin Common Good Fund and £6,000 from the River Lossie Trust.

Roddy Burns, Moray Council Chief Executive, said: “We’re grateful to the Elgin councillors for choosing to use the discretionary funding to put this measure in place.

"It will allow us to promote our parking facilities and Elgin town centre’s range of shops and businesses.

"It also provides a gesture of goodwill to residents, recognising that there has been a reduction in available parking and preferred locations while Batchen Lane multi-storey has been undergoing repairs.

"The whole offer represents collaborative working across parties from the Elgin ward members.”
