THE immediate future of Grant Hall in Rothes has been secured – with 16 new committee members appointed at an EGM last night.

Two weeks ago, the hall's three-person committee was forced to put out a public appeal for help amid closure fears due to an unmanageable workload.

This came after the death of former treasurer Raymond Johnston, who had worked overtime to keep the hall ticking over.

It was hoped that the committee could become roughly nine-strong. Despite closure fears, the trio on the committee were confident the local community would step forward to help.

They were right to be confident, with a turnout of 22 people ensuring the hall now has 19 committee members – including a new secretary and treasurer.

Chairman Des Johnston, brother of Raymond, said: "It was great that the Rothes community once again got behind the hall.

"It was a very positive meeting with great enthusiasm from the people who have joined the committee, as well as people who cannot commit to being on the committee but are willing to help as we move forward.

"It's things like this that make me very proud to say I'm from Rothes."

Local councillor Louise Nicol has stepped back from her roles as secretary and treasurer, although she will remain on the committee.

The new treasurer will be Gillian Innes, while Diane Hampton will be secretary.

Louise said: "I've been secretary and treasurer since Raymond passed away, so it's time for change at the hall.

"I'm very proud of the local community. The new committee are really enthusiastic and raring to go.

"We have one member already looking at energy and broadband providers to get a better deal.

"These are the things that Des and I haven’t had time to do."

New secretary Diane added: "It was an excellent turnout so credit to locals. Let's hope the enthusiasm for the hall is maintained."

Raymond Johnston’s wife Lynne added: "This is what makes Rothes a great wee town.

"I loved the enthusiasm last night and it's fantastic that the hall will continue to shine as a great venue."

Grant Hall has been community-owned for many years and has recently had a new music system installed, with the stage, floors and kitchen all done up.

The committee will meet at the hall again at 7pm on Wednesday, September 15, to discuss roles in more detail. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
