Gates sung hits such as Spirit in the Sky during a popular afternoon set - and took time to jump off stage and interact with the crowd.

He gave adoring supporters high fives as he ran down the barrier - before clambering back onto stage to finish his set.

Speaking afterwards, he said: “It’s been really great, I really enjoy performing up in Scotland.

“It’s always a great audience and the reception is always fantastic for me. It was great to be part of this great festival and I hope to be back in the future.

“You often find the further north you go, the better the crowds are and we are right at the top of Scotland now so it’s great.”

On interacting with the crowd, he added: “The crowds have come to see artists like myself and if I’m able to get down off the stage and interact with the audience then I always do.

“It’s a very, very high stage and it was hard getting back up - but I had to pull something out the bag but I got back on stage and it was all OK.”
