GORDON Castle Walled Garden in Fochabers has been nominated for the prestigious Historic Houses Garden of the Year Award.

The garden, which was a ploughed field just six years ago, has been nominated for the award alongside some of the most famous gardens across the United Kingdom.

It is the only Scottish nominee – with the competition never having been won by an entrant north of the border.

Zara Gordon Lennox, who runs the Gordon Castle estate with husband Angus, said: "This is our first time being nominated for this highly-prestigious award.

"We are up against massive national trust gardens. There are some properly important gardens nominated so we are incredibly honoured to be among this group.

"We are not necessarily expecting to win, but it's an honour to be nominated.

"It's a massive testament to our staff and volunteers – it's a big boost to all of us after a difficult year."

The award is decided by a public vote, with some of the rival gardens attracting more than 100,000 visitors per year.

So the team at Gordon Castle will be needing some extra help locally.

Mrs Gordon Lennox encouraged Moray folk to vote for them if they can.

She added: "It's not a judge's choice, so we need all the support we can get.

"Even if you haven't been to the garden, there are some lovely photos on our website and we would be incredibly grateful and delighted if you decided we were worthy of your vote."

Voting closes on Thursday, September 30, with an announcement to be made an Historic Houses AGM in November.
