A Moray pipe band are set to perform before a global TV audience of millions next month at the iconic Hong Kong Sevens tournament.

Almost 40 students from Gordonstoun have been invited to provide music at the sporting event which features some of the world's best rugby players.

The school band are due to play a rendition of Highland Cathedral as well as other traditional Scottish tunes at the final on Sunday, April 7, when up to 40,000 fans will be in the Hong Kong Stadium.

Kathryn Nip, who's aged 13 and plays the drums, is from Hong Kong herself.

She said: "I'm very excited about being able to show my home country to all of my friends in the pipe band.

"I'm sure everybody will be impressed by the beauty of Hong Kong."

The band will spend several days in the Chinese city, taking part in several events, including a performance with local pipes and drums at the tournament’s fanzone.

They will also play at Ocean Park, one of Hong Kong’s largest theme parks.

Scott Niven, a drumming instructor with the band, added: "The trip will provide some great experiences and memories for the students. Unsurprisingly, there is a real sense of excitement.

"This will be the biggest audience the band has ever played before and it’s a tremendous honour to represent the school at such a world-renowned event."

King Charles III recently awarded the band special commemorative medals for playing the pipes during the Coronation celebrations in July.

Last year, during the annual Braemar Gathering, the monarch also awarded the school the Championship Shield after they were judged the best pipe band.
