PRIMARY schools are set to take part in the Gordonstoun Junior Highland Games at the weekend – where there will be a special guest.

Seventeen schools – both local and from across Scotland – will take part in the event on Saturday, April 29, with members of the community invited to free of charge.

The special guest chieftain at the Games this year will be BBC Radio Scotland presenter John Beattie, who is a former Scotland rugby player.

Mr Beattie said: “I am thrilled to be part of this great event, which is an important day in the calendar for the school, and the local community.

"I’m looking forward to spending time with the children and presenting the medals and prizes.”

All proceeds from the event will go towards two local Moray charities – Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation and Moray School Bank.

Head teacher of the Junior School at Gordonstoun, Cath Lyall, added: “We are very excited that so many primary schools are taking part.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity to get all the local pupils together again for a day of competition and family fun while raising funds for two inspiring local charities.”

Doors are open to the public at 11am, with the official opening ceremony to take place at midday.

Caber toss, hurling the haggis, slippery pole, tug of war, running races, Highland dancing and piping and drumming competitions will all take place on the day.

The tea hall will be open and offering home bakes, with hot foot available from the BBQ and pizza oven. Craft stalls will showcase local talents and entertain younger members of the family.

A children's tent will offer face painting, toys and a bookshop, with a grand raffle to provide everyone with a chance to win an array of prizes.
