THE Scottish Greens have called for average speed cameras on the A96 in order to cut speeds and save lives.

The comments came on the same day as the Scottish Parliament debated the proposed dualling projects on the A9 and A96.

Scottish Greens MSP for the North East, Maggie Chapman, said: “Safety must be a key priority when it comes to our approach to roads.

"We know that excessive speed is a major cause of accidents. We also know that one way to cut speeds is through the use of average speed cameras.

“Average speed cameras prevent accidents and make our roads safer. Fatalities fell by 40 per cent in the first three years after their introduction on the A9, collisions were down by nearly a quarter while frustrating road closures due to accidents were reduced again by a quarter. By adding them to the A96 we can cut speeds and save lives.

“We also need to consider the environmental impact of our roads. That is why we negotiated a climate impact assessment on dualling plans, to ensure we are not just paving the way for more traffic congestion and more pollution.

“Now more than ever it is vital that we invest in our public transport infrastructure and improve the rail network across the north east. Spending billions of pounds on road expansions that will only drive up traffic and increase the risk of accidents is not the answer. We need safe, green, accessible transport infrastructure if we are to create the safer, greener and inclusive society we want to see.”
