Damage to the existing groyne (a structure to interrupt water flow and limit the movement of sediment) has led to a build up of silt at the Moray Council-owned harbour.

The cost of the repair works to the groyne is £240,000.

A council spokesperson said: “We’re undertaking works to repair a section of failed groyne at Burghead.

"This includes the installation of rock armour to create a barrier to reduce the impact of sand entering the harbour entrance and ensure the harbour remains operational.”

There is a roughly three hour window at low tide when the work could take place.

The harbour has a single basin and has a number of inshore vessels engaged in shellfish and squid fishing.
