The free Tai Chi session is part of First Time for Everything, a programme designed by Royal Voluntary Service to support physical and mental health and wellbeing. Supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, First Time for Everything gives people, particularly those that are older or less mobile, the opportunity to try something new for free in their local community, and to be social and active.

Originating in China as a martial art, Tai Chi combines deep breathing with gentle, flowing movements which create a state of calm and centredness, and which are said to promote wellbeing.

Local instructor, Caroline van der Heiden, will guide participants through a session of gentle physical exercises and stretches to connect the mind and body. Each posture will flow into the next without pause, ensuring that the body is in constant motion. The class can be done seated or standing, and there will be breathing exercises for relaxation at the end.

Comfortable clothes and soft shoes are recommended. Refreshments will be provided after the class and the venue is fully accessible to all.

Laura Chow, Head of Charities, People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “It’s never too late to try something new and to have fun trying. First Time for Everything activities are a safe, gentle and enjoyable way to be active and social, which are vital to our health and wellbeing. Thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, local people will be able to enjoy a wide range of interesting activities this year.”
