A WHISKY enthusiast has turned his love for Scotland's iconic spirit into a thriving Elgin based business.
Murray Greig has had a passion for whisky for more than 30 years and after spending many years learning about the spirit and spending time at whisky auctions, Murray realised that despite being the whisky heartland and surrounded by distilleries, there were no auctioneers based in Elgin.
The realisation inspired Murray to set up Click Whisky Auctions, where alongside his sister Dawn, he conducts online auctions for whisky enthusiasts across the world. Since launching the business in December 2022 Click Whisky Auctions has held 16 auctions and has helped some collectors sell their unused bottles for thousands.
Murray said: "A collector was showing me some of his bottles for valuation and out of the corner of my eye I spotted this bottle sat amongst others worth a few hundred, I knew it was something special, he had only bought the bottle for 60 or 70 pounds and it ended up making over £6,000 at auction.
"Often it's people that have no expectation that end up with really expensive bottles, a customer up north phoned up once for a valuation, he didn't think they would be worth much but he had two really really old bottles and he ended up making a few thousand pounds. It is really nice when someone has no expectation and you can surprise them, that's the best bit of the job."
In order to find rare and unique bottles, Murray travels across the north-east and north of Scotland, including trips to Orkney and south of Aberdeen and he has sold to collectors all across the world with customers from America, the Netherlands and Israel tuning in to bid on his rare bottles.
He said: "It is amazing to see what folk from across the world are interested in, we have had customers who had bought bottles for £1000 along with bottles worth £20, it is all just based on individual tastes and interests."
Click Whisky Auctions also offer free valuation services and are there to guide their customers through every step of the auction process.
Murray is also holding his first-ever valuation event next week at his business premises at Unit 4 Chanonry Street on Chanonry Road in Elgin and is encouraging people in Moray to dust off their old bottles and bring them in for a free valuation.
He said: "There are a lot of people who have whisky sitting in an attic or a cupboard that has been there for years, it will never be drunk and it's not doing any good sitting gathering dust, especially in this climate, it's great to find out how much it could be worth."
The valuation event will be held on March 28, 29 and 30 from 10am - 5pm.
