A teenager was caught drink driving after going out on a late-night search for food in Elgin.

Archie Milne was stopped by the police on Pinefield Road after they saw him driving without any headlights.

Noticing his speech was slurred, they carried out a roadside breath test which he failed.

When an official test was later administered at Elgin police station, it recorded a reading of 55 – exactly two-and-a-half times the legal limit of 22.

Elgin Sheriff Court heard that the 19-year-old from Dunbar had been in Moray for work.

On June 19, the date of the offence, he and a colleague had been drinking in their lodgings.

Defence solicitor Martin O'Neill said: "He thought it would be a good idea to collect some food. He had felt okay to drive – but clearly he wasn't.

"I'm extremely confident he's not someone who's going to come before the courts again."

Sheriff Robert McDonald banned Milne from the roads for a year and fined him £640.
