The first formal step is about to be taken regarding a bid to build a maltings on the outskirts of Rothes.

What's known as a planning application notice, or PAN, will be laid before Moray Council tomorrow morning.

Such PANs are a legal requirement in relation to any large-scale developments.

Simpsons Malt Ltd has already said it intends to seek planning permission later this year to build an industrial plant on a 40-acre site it has bought near the Rothes Corde power station.

If given the go-ahead, the site will process up to 100,000 tonnes of malt per annum.

The family firm, which was established in 1862, already supplies a number of distilleries across Moray.

The proposed development would be the company's third plant, adding to other sites it already runs in Berwick and Norwich.

It states that as many as 40 jobs could eventually be created.
