Keith business Mither Tongue nominated at Scots Language Awards

A KEITH business has received an award nomination for its hard work in keeping the Scots language alive.

Mither Tongue has been nominated in the Business o' the Year category at the Scots Language Awards and is among this year’s 60 nominees.

Opened in 1998, the family-owned shop was founded by Marguerite Cruickshank and sells a range of gifts and items bearing the Scots language.

Mrs Cruickshank said: “A’d aye tinkered wi writin Scots rhyme as a bairn, an bein in ma early fifties wi the bairns up an wirkin, wis lookin for a change fae office wirk.

“A puckle business stertup courses later, Mither Tongue wis up an rinnin, although hame-based until 2008 fan the thocht o the 250th anniversary o Burns – Hamecomin Scotland 2009 – gart me track doun shop premises in the toun centre. We’ve been here iver since.”

The awards ceremony will take place at Johnstone Town Hall in Renfrewshire on Saturday, September 16, and will celebrate the importance of the Scots language in Scotland’s culture.

Entertainment at the event will include Renfrewshire’s poet laureate Shaun Moore, Scottish writers Cat Cochrane and Shane Strachan, and folk singer Iona Fyfe, from Huntly.

Organiser Simon Thoumire said: “It's bin wunnerfu tae lairn aboot aa the fowk, some names we already kent, ithers new tae us, ettlin tae mak shuir oor braw Scots leid steys in guid hert.

“It haes nivver been mair importint tae acknowledge the fowk whaes wirk is keeping the leid tae the fore baith in thir daily lives an in its cultur, music an wirds.”

Voting for this year’s Scots Language Awards opened on Monday, August 28, and will close on Sunday, September 10.
