MORAY man Kyle Garden has won an accolade for his "inspirational" transition into independent living over the past year.

Social care charity Cornerstone marked Kyle's achievement at the 2019 Scottish Learning Disability Awards. He has been supported by staff from the charity's base at Wardend Place in Elgin.

Cornerstone is a leading provider of services for people with disabilities and other support needs. The Scottish Learning Disability Awards were held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Edinburgh on May 17.

Supported by dedicated colleagues in Elgin, Kyle took home the award for skills and learning.

Project leader Gemma Taylor, who works closely with Kyle, said: "Kyle’s journey has been a huge inspiration to the team at Wardend Place and Cornerstone as a support provider.

"Most days, he pushes us all to think differently about the support we provide and has encouraged a positive risk-taking environment for all in the Moray branch."

The Scottish Commission for Learning Disability hosted the awards. Its chief executive, Charlie McMillan, said: "The awards recognise the talents and achievements of people with learning disabilities, and the people who work with and for them.

"Kyle Garden is a perfect example of this, and he thoroughly deserves the recognition of being a winner at the awards. His achievements highlight the contribution that people with learning disabilities can make to their community when they are given the right opportunities and support to realise their hopes and ambitions."
